Students take their cues from us on how much and in what ways they will need to engage with the class material. Using the motivation framework from How Learning Works, we will examine ways in which we might be sending our students unintended messages that motivate surface learning strategies, and we will explore how to change our signals so that students go deeper.

The TLC spring 2013 workshop series is themed around the topic of motivation. Motivating students is a complex task and the overwhelming emphasis on grades can make it even harder to find ways to reach students and create a genuine excitement about learning.
