Writing a Teaching Philosophy Statement: Graduate Students and Fellows Workshop

12

February

  • 3:30pm - 4:30pm on Friday, February 12th, 2010
The Statement of Teaching Philosophy is now a standard component of one's professional portfolio. Yet, you may have asked yourself, "Do I really have one?" "What is a teaching philosophy? "Why is it important to have one anyway?" You may even have been in the unenviable position of having had to assess one without any idea of how to do so! This workshop is devoted to helping individuals construct their own statement. Dr. Jeffrey D. Lerner, Associate Professor of History and Director of the Teaching and Learning Center will discuss the purpose and goals of a teaching philosophy statement. The session will focus on five broad questions: * What are your objectives as a teacher? * By what methods will you achieve or work toward those objectives? * How do you intend to measure your effectiveness vis-à-vis your objectives and methods? * Why is teaching important? * How do you want to make a difference in the lives of your students? Deadline for signup is Monday, February 8. Please contact the TLC if you have any questions at 758-4587. Alternatively, contact Dr. Johnson (Dept. Biology) at johnsoad@wfu.edu, or 758-5320. This event is co-sponsored by the WFU Graduate School, as part of the TLC Training for TAs Program.
